A lovely example of an English Antique Grandfather clock Dial which would have been on a 30 hour mechanical longcase clock.
Its beauty lies in the quality of the painting on the 4 corners and in the centre, as well as the clear bold Roman numerals.
This 19th century dial shows the name of the clockmaker - Steadman from West Sussex, a noted clockmaker listed in 'Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World' as working between 1828-55.
These dials were not made by the clockmaker himself but bought in very often from places like Stoke-on-Trent where the dials had been painted by the skilled artists in the Potteries. The themes are very often floral and the basket of fruit shown in the centre here would have been a design used on plates, trays etc.
Another interesting thing about this dial is that we have bought it completely up to date by powering it with a modern quartz movement, running off a AA battery, which guarantees perfect time.
Very easy to hang on the wall or display against books, furniture etc.
